Skills vs MCP servers vs plugins
Agent Skills are folders with a SKILL.md file. They teach an agent how to do something — a workflow, a house style, a document format. The format is an open standard, so one skill works in Claude, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code and many other agents.
MCP servers give an agent access to tools and data — GitHub, a browser, a database, a SaaS app — through the Model Context Protocol. Remote servers connect by URL with OAuth; local servers run on your machine.
Plugins bundle several skills, commands, hooks or MCP servers so you can install a whole setup at once.
